Things you need to check or know before signing employment contract.
Sometimes out of frustration, desperation or even excitement we sign an employment letter without knowing they have certain clause that can ruin our career and future.
This are 5 basic things to look out for.
- Salary Scheme: Kindly check that your salary is what you negotiated for at the end of the month. And it’s not tied to certain targets, performances or sales.
- Time: If your employment states 8 to 6 or 9 to 5 make sure you stick to that. Beware of clauses which state “Work hours are 9 to 6 Mon – Fri but sometimes you might be required to work longer hours and weekends’ Darling kindly renegotiate for extra payment for those overtime work hours and days. And make sure it’s stated in the employment letter. Or request they take out the extra hours without pay. Because time is money.
- Salary Deductions. The only legal deduction allowed is Pension & Tax any other deduction from your salary is illegal. Although some companies state in the employment letter that deductions will be made if there are any mistakes that cause the company to lose money will be refunded from the offenders salary. However such deductions can be contested if the mistake or damage can be reused for other company projects. Because the scam is they make you pay for it and then reuse the “damaged item” or your mistake for other projects which in return is valuable to the organisation.
4 . POLICY : Some company policies are very tricky they can make you sign away your future e.g. some company policies won’t allow you work for their competitors, clients or companies they perceive as threats for 3 years after resigning or being sacked from their company. And sometimes all these categories of companies listed in the clause are all juicy and well paying companies so be careful.
- Read & Sign all pages: Some organisations are very cunning ones, when they see that their employees are very knowledgeable and are going to have an edge over them in certain areas where there is a fault or loop hole in their contract they quickly type out something to suit them and add to the copies of your employment files. So its important you sign all pages make copies for your self in case of ‘scam time’, you can produce what you have.
I am just saying.
