“Mummy if you say Eminem is the best Rap artist why are Jay Z & Kanye bigger than him” My son asked me during a conversation on Friday. The conversation came up when the radio station was playing Jams from the past. I heard RAP from naughty by nature, Heavy D soul for real etc. And I said to him this is the reason why Eminem became the master, compared to Eminem these artists Rap sound like child’s play.
Back to his question, there is a difference between beign a talented or passionate person and beign a business man. Which was the case with Jay z, Dr Dre and Kanye. This three aside singing, understood the business of music, they are bigger than Eminem in terms of cash because of their involvement in music business and other businesses; they own record labels, management companies, Commercialized their brands in merchandising items e.g Beats by Dre, Kayne own a sneaker company etc
Eminem on the other hand is only a passionate artist he is there for the love of music; he applies himself to his music which is why he is the best Rap artist in terms of Lyrics, Spiting Bars, has good messages to pass across with his music he made money and that’s it for him.
Eminem can drop music every 24 hrs for 365dayz if he chooses to, same goes for Rkelly. They are only talented and passionate not business men.
Which applies to every arm of business, some are business owners; they are not there because they understand the industry they are there for the proceeds and they achieve success by employing professionals to help them build their empires
while some are in business because they are passionate about what they do. They do it for the love and not for the proceeds.
I am not sure if my response to my son is correct but that’s my perspective on why some make it bigger than the others in music.
